Our Game Plan!

Our current kitchen and living space downstairs needs a complete overhaul! Our plan is to tackle the entire first floor all at once, adding a new kitchen, half bathroom and expanded living space. Since Chris and I are tackling the project ourselves... it may be a long road, but we are going to keep looking for the light at the end of the tunnel! This blog will allow us to share our experiences and keep our family and friends up to date with the progress.

Granite!

The blizzard set us back a couple of days on the granite installation.
It was worth the wait...

Cabinets

We love our cabinets! Thank you Rob and Jack for helping us install them. Also, we enjoyed having all of our family and friends visit this weekend to check out the progress. :)

Plaster & Painting

The plasterers we hired did such a great job. They had the entire first floor done in 3 days! Painting has been quite the project the last few days and we couldn't have done it with out our family. Thank you to both of our parents for all of their help <3

Wood Stove

I actually think that the entire renovation was centered around this wood stove ;)
We had to free up the chimney, re-brick the front and add a liner system to make it safe.

It's going to be so cozy this winter.

We finally have walls! Chris and I have been waiting for this since we started the project.

It looks absolutely amazing...

Roof?!

Chris came home on Wednesday night to find a puddle of water in our new kitchen. Our roof was leaking! Over the weekend he put together a crew of guys and they fixed our roof. It was a lot of work and an unexpected expense. I guess that's what happens when you are going through renovations.

Thanks to all the guys who helped yesterday!

Insulation

We used two types of insulation - regular batt insulation for the interior walls/ceiling and spray foam insulation for the exterior walls.

When we first started this project and ripped down the old plaster, there was no insulation at all!
The new insulation is going to make this house cozy...

Emma is ready for this project to be over... she misses her couch ;)

Granite

Last Saturday we went to the stone yard in Winchester to pick out our slab of granite. It was really inspiring to see all of the beautiful stones!

We chose this one...

Finally a Working Bathroom!

For the past couple of months we havent had a working toilet, sink and shower all in the same room! Our toilet was downstairs, sink on the front porch and shower upstairs. Finally we have a full working bathroom. Thanks Mom for decorating :)

New Deck - Part I

Lights!

The electrician has been working on installing all new wiring, recessed lighting and outlets.
What a difference lighting makes!

Kitchen Island and Woodstove

Chris worked on framing the knee walls for the island and he made a really nice hearth for our woodstove.

Visitors

Since our heat is up and running and the house is nice and warm, we've had a few visitors. They are getting in through the open soffit - hopefully they start to fly south soon!

Heat?!

We have a new furnace in the basement just waiting to be fired up! We're looking forward to having heat soon - it's really starting to feel like Fall now.

Chris and Rob also worked all day on Saturday and they finished up strapping the entire first floor. Thanks Rob!

Out with the Old... in with the New

Removing the Window in the Living Room:

Chris and Jack took out the window from the living room that looked out onto the front porch (a.k.a; our temporary kitchen at the moment)

Opening the Entry Doorway and Removing Plaster:
Because we added the half bath it felt like the entry way to the kitchen was much smaller. The doorway was opened up and all of the old horse hair plaster was removed.

Griffin took a nap...he really should be helping out a little more....
